Last year in December, Major Lazer graced the Aussies shores and tore up Stereosonic. I was absolutely hanging to see them, but of course our tight savings budget did not allow. Being a massive ML fan I was absolutely shattered however I had a strong feeling at some stage I’d cross paths with the group somewhere in the world during our travels (they tour ALL THE TIME).
That dream became a reality on the 22nd of January while I was hanging out in Udaipur scrolling through my Facebook feed when I came across an announcement that Diplo was bringing his Mad Decent crew to India for 3 shows on the 19th, 20th and 21st of February in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru respectively. Maddy and I wasted no time in booking tickets to the Mad Decent Block Party in Bengaluru and were willing to travel any distance to be at this once in a lifetime gig, could there be any better time or place to see these guys tear it up – Major Lazer at their peak after releasing ‘Lean On’ which became the most streamed song ever on Spotify and the film clip (filmed in India) having 1,000,000,000 plays on YouTube. Having said that they tour so much there is a high chance we’ll get to see them again at some stage during the next year.
We caught a 15-hour night bus from Goa to Bengaluru just for the show. Once we got off the bus we quickly freshened up in our hotel, slapped on our freshest Major Lazer merch and headed down to the event. I don’t know how many of you have ever experienced and Indian crowd at a music festival, neither had I, and I can say absolutely nothing will prepare you for how hectic the crowd is. At times it got that wild I feared for Maddy because she’s such a short lass, being 6’2” I towered over most of the crowd which came in handy when Diplo threw merch into the crowd. The day started with Nucleya dropping his heavy trap infused with plenty of Indian music which got the crowd heaving, I’d never seen him live and I’m very glad I did, if you see him on any line-ups definitely check him out. Followed by Giraffage, Big Gigantic and Gorgon City. All killer acts and the perfect warm up for the main course. The fear of the crowd strengthened trying to get into the after party, there was a huge crowd pushing screaming which literally chewed us up and spat us out.
Major Lazer literally blew me away, I’ve seen some awesome acts live but nothing compares to the energy these guys create. EVERYBODY was going bonkers in a very good way.
Any who, check out these videos below to feel the vibes of the Block Party.
